FREELANCE CUSTOM CONTENT PRODUCER SOUGHT
About.com is seeking a talented, creative self-starter with excellent
editorial instincts and judgment to fill the role of Custom Content
Producer at our headquarters in New York City. We need someone who works
very well under deadline and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Experience in an online publishing environment is required. This is a part-
time position with the potential for full-time employment.
Responsibilities:
* Work across teams (Editorial, Sales, Development, Product Management) to
plan and launch editorial content packages around specific themes to be
sponsored by advertisers. These packages are not advertorials and should
remain editorially independent while still meeting advertiser needs in
terms of targeting the demographic. Content themes range from personal
finance to fashion and everything in between.
* Help to brainstorm editorial package themes and content angles.
* Manage editorial schedule associated with these packages and communicate
dates as needed to the rest of the team.
* Work with editors and freelance writers to choose existing About.com
content that is of high quality and fits the theme of the package.
* Launch and maintain content packages using About.com’s suite of content
management tools as well as FTP.
* Manage editorial promotion of the content packages.
* Manage bloggers as needed associated with content packages (identifying
best potential bloggers for the package, communicating expectations,
ensuring they are paid, etc.).
* Develop podcast scripts as needed and work with Product Management team
to produce final podcasts. Some of the script writing may be done by
freelance writers and will need editing. Others will need to be written by
the person who fills this position.
Requirements
* Must have 2-3 years experience creating or managing online content
packages.
* Strong communication skills via email, phone and other methods.
* Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and familiarize yourself
with new topics quickly.
* Excellent copywriting skills.
* Great editorial voice/tone and a sense of humor.
* Must be extremely detail-oriented.
* Must be very tech-savvy and comfortable with a variety of content
management systems as well as FTP and HTML.
* Experience managing freelance writers or independent contractors a strong
plus.
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

STORIES WANTED
The story site Common Ties has been publishing personal stories on a wide
range of topics since October. Among its themes, Common Ties is seeking
stories about eating disorders. Stories are due by June 5 and writers will
be notified on June 7th if their story has been selected for publication
starting June 11. Submissions might be about anorexia, bulimia, compulsive
over-eating, or obsessions about certain foods. Stories can be about
yourself or someone you know well and can be written using your real name
or a pen name.
Typical payment per story is between $100 and $200 although writers can
suggest another payment amount. We now prefer stories between 750 and 1,500
words. For more information check out the about page and the submission
guidelines. We review both new stories and reprints.
We will be running confession stories beginning Tuesday May 29.
