The Most Important Thing You’ve Learned About Writing

I would like to open up a discussion about writing and hear what other writers have to say. What is the most important thing you have learned since you started writing or blogging? Blogging IS writing, as far as I am concerned. The elements are all there: making sure your sentence structure is correct, that you have good grammar and punctuation, that you say something meaningful and helpful, and that you edit, edit, edit!

I will start it off.

The most important thing I have learned about writing is that you should listen to your instincts when you get a critique. Everyone has an opinion, but follow your heart. Listen and learn, but don’t let anyone dictate your story.

So the floor is open, wide open. Tell us what the most important thing you have learned about writing.

Howdy, Denise!

I think the most important thing I learned about writing was to find my own voice.

A really difficult lesson for me to learn (and I’ve had to learn it twice) is that even though you might be able to write really well in one style, this doesn’t necessarily work well in another environment.

So, for me, moving from writing in the academic style used for writing research papers to writing in a business style used for proposals and business letters was a difficult transition - and (more recently) to move from business writing to blogging.

Think I’m still inclined to slip backwards … but I’m an ace proofreader. Of somebody else’s work, naturally!

I think that the key to a successful writing career is business is perseverance. The single best thing that anyone can do to succeed as a writer is to keep at it.

Writing is a muscle that needs constant working out, flexing and stretching to strengthen, and nourishment. Sometimes the muscle needs a break when its overly weary.

The most important thing I learnt about writing (for me) is that I hate to do it if it’s work, and I love to do it when I am not supposed to. Does that even make sense!?

Robert: Great article, as usual!

Lucy: I so agree.

Laura: You KNOW I agree with that one!

Glenda: Ain’t that the truth!

Calvin: WORD!

Thank you all for chiming in. Good stuff here.

I added blogging to my freelance writing career two years ago and I’ve learned that it is different than other kinds of writing. It needs to integrate images, video, and community in order to work. My newspaper columns and articles never had to do that.
