FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK…
Hiya!
As you’ve probably noticed, newsletters have not been going out lately. This new little baby of mine has kept me hopping, as well as the other two kiddies. So I’m a wee bit behind in my work. I might cut back with the newsletters over the summer and send one every two weeks unless time affords me the opportunity to send it weekly. So, I’m not bowing out…just slowing down a bit for the summer while I get my household under control
Fiona is 3 months old now and getting SO big. She’s 24″ long and over 14lbs so she’s doing really well. Full of smiles and giggles, and loves her big brother and sister.
Nick and I are doing well…perhaps a bit tired but I’d say that’s an occupational hazard with having three kids under five years of age!
On a very happy note, I saw that Writer Gazette made it on the Writer’s Digest Best Websites of 2008! So THANK YOU to all of you who voted for the site…I really appreciate it! There are loads of other useful sites listed there so be sure to check it out:
http://www.writersdigest.com/101BestSites/?m_nYear=2008
Has anyone seen the sun lately? Here in British Columbia, Canada we are experiencing a new month that we’ve named “Juneuary” because it’s COLD! We have barely seen the sun…mostly just having rain and cold weather! Ugh! So if you have the sun where you are, could you send a little over here! We’re severely vitamin D deprived and our children are going crazy!! LOL
Alright, on with the writing!
Happy Writing,
Krista Barrett, Site Owner & Fellow Writer

ASK WWOW
Do you have a writer-related question? Send your question to mailto:editor@writergazette.com Subject line: “Ask WWOW” and we’ll post the answer in our newsletter.
Q: If a magazine has a editor-in-chief, managing editor and assoc. editor, who do you query? And how do you handle no clips?
Betty Latimer
A: Sometimes the guidelines USUALLY published on the website gives you a clue. If it is a travel piece I would submit to the travel editor, if it is a lifestyle piece, I would submit to the lifestyle editor, etc. There is no blanket rule but looking carefully at the website and magazine if possible might help…

* Hi Krista, How are you? I don’t know how you manage to keep doing what you do with the new addition. Please send your energy my way. “POSTPARTUM BLUES PLUS TWENTY” is an essay I wrote concerning my survival tactics and also speaks of the wonderful goals he’s reached and I’ve reached in dealing with Autism. This essay is one of several in a book titled, “VOICES OF AUTISM” by “LaChance Publishing” out in May 2008. People from various walks of life diagnosed with Autism or deal with autistic family members share their powerful personal stories. The profits from this book will be donated to “THE HEALING PROJECT” a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a community of support for those challenged with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. http://www.thehealingproject.org “Voices of Autism” can be ordered at www.amazon.com I also will have an essay titled, “Please Send My Son home Exhausted,” included in an upcoming book, “Holler For Your Health: Be The Key To A Healthy Family” by Teresa Holler on 7/15/08 available for preordering at http://www.holler4health.comin I’m a writer with multiple publications. I can be reached at my email address or my websites, and gladly speak to anyone regarding living with an Autistic child.

* Dear Krista: Thank you for keeping this service going strong in your busy, busy life. Best wishes on your continued success. Here’s my brag: I am happy to report that after about eight rejections over two years, “Gobble Village Chic,” a story I wrote two decades ago (and which went through numerous rewrites during that period), was published last week in Hackwriters.com within a week of electronic submission. Established nine years ago, Hackwriters bills itself as “The International Writers Magazine.” It is part of the MA in Creative Writing at Portsmouth University. Right now, I’m its number one fan. You will find the story @ http://www.hackwriters.com/Gobblechic.htm

* Hi Krista, Picked up two Honorable Mentions in short story contests this past week: First was in ReadingWriters’ Killer Thriller Contest: http://www.readingwriters.com/con_results.htm for “Overshadowed.” Second came from The Third Glass Woman Prize at http://www.sigriddaughter.com/GlassWomanPrize.htm for “The Girl With the Six-Inch Venus” (along with a personal note from the site owner commending my entry in the Second contest). Both contests received more than 260 entries, so I’m feeling pretty good about the results.

* Hi, Krista! Thanks for a place to brag. Bragging here about the first time I got paid out of a Houston market. Yea! I’ve been doing paid interviews for Natural Awakenings Magazine-Houston for 5 months. To paraphrase the song: Breaking in to freelancing is hard to do. Published by LaChance Publishing, the new anthology, Voices of Autism; The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength contains 40 stories filled with true-life accounts by parents, caregivers and individuals touched by this disorder. One of the essays just happens to be my hilarious, but poignant account, “Aron’s Bar Mitzvah.” LaChance Publishing is donating 100% of its profits from the book to LaChance’s The Healing Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and support of those living with life-threatening and chronic illnesses. Voices of Autism costs $16.95, (CAN) $18.95, and will be available at bookstores everywhere and online at The Healing Project website http://www.thehealingproject.org./

* Good morning Krista! After reading in a Writer Gazette issue about a year ago that Cup of Comfort was accepting submissions, I submitted an essay I’d written entitled, “Dating with Children” for their Single Mothers series. It was accepted almost immediately, and I just received my contributor’s copy a few weeks back. I am preparing to do a series of booksignings in Colorado with other contributors. Thanks for the great tip! P.S. For any writers considering Cup of Comfort, they are professional and a pleasure to work with. Thanks, Diana Rowe http://www.dianarowe.com
