The Soundtrack of My Life

I love music. I always have. I cannot imagine a world where music didn’t exist. It has shaped who I am. And I feel lucky to have grown up in the 60’s and 70s, an era when some of the best music of all time was created.

I also feel lucky to have had such young parents. I can remember my mama and daddy having parties when I was very young. They played cards and danced to country tunes by Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Conway Twitty, Ray Price, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline. They boogied to the music of Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly. Looking back now, I see that my parents were actually very cool. They were hip enough to move forward, embracing the rhythm of Motown and the Rolling Stones, while I was jamming to Janice Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.
I truly am an old hippie. My best friend Carol and I used to sit for hours, talking about the meaning of life and deciphering the words of artists like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and the Moody Blues and writing poetry. I used to go to concerts all the time. The ones that stick out in my mind as the best were Grand Funk Railroad, Billy Preston, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, and a bluesfest with B.B. King, Etta James and Johnny Lee Hooker. Ah, the memories! Wild, fun times.
My oldest son played guitar and worshipped Stevie Ray Vaughn. They used to call me Niecy Cline at Karoake.
We have always been a family of soul.

Now that I have passed the 50 year milestone, I find that the soundtrack of life runs on a much more mellow track. I love to tune in to Pandora, and listen to music by artists like Christopher Cross, Harry Chapin, James Taylor. I bought a CD last week of oldies tunes from the 60s and was delighted to find the song “Altantis,” and “In the Year 2525.”

When it comes to modern music, I’m not so up to date, though I do love Counting Crows, Train, The Wallflowers, Kid Rock, Mary J. Blige, and Three Doors Down. One of my favorite modern tunes is Superman by Five for Fighting. So I’m not a total dinosaur.

What a fun post this was to write, I think I’ll head over to Pandora!

Great post! Visiting via the carnival.

Thanks, Lisa. I am headed over there to cruise the blogs myself.

I love that “2525″ song!!

Dang! I was wondering if anyone would remember it.

I love “In the Year 2525.” I’ve always wanted that song. Thanks for reminding me of that one…I’ll have to head over to the iTunes Store and pick it up.

My parents listened to very diverse music and now I appreciate almost all music. Music is a great part of life!

Isn’t it great to have parents that are tuned in? :)

Well, from one dinosaur to another, “PEACE.”

Thanks, CyberCelt, I am definitely in.

I’m a bit of a dinosaur myself, fromt he same era. Not so much interested in the music that gets all of the airplay todya, but I’m with you on Superman. Great Song.

Err.. I think I’m still young because I don’t know most of the artists you mentioned, except for Rod Stewart. But I love oldies. Oldies are good :)

I figured there would be quite a few readers like you, too young to remember many of the artists. But hey, now you have some names, head over to Pandora and check out some kiss ass music!
