Review of “The Linnet Bird” by Linda Holeman

I said in an earlier blog post that I had acquired a taste for historical fiction for the first time. It is strange, how your reading taste can change like that. I used to be hooked on psychological thrillers but it really takes an excellent one to hold my interest these days.

I have done the same thing with foods I have loved, eaten them so much that I lost my taste for them. Oh well.

Anyway, I want to tell you about this wonderful historical fiction novel called THE LINNET BIRD by Linda Holeman. It is set in Liverpool and then India back in the mid 1800s. Linny Gow is a the daughter of a weak but loving mother who dies when Linny is only 12 and that is when her stepfather begins to sell her into prostitution. Linny is a tough girl, for she suffers at the hand of brutal strangers until she finally makes her escape when she is 16. Her savior is a man with trembling hands called Shaker who falls in love with Linny, the only woman he’s ever met who treated like a real man instead of a freak.

But Linny has big dreams and a restless heart. With the help of Shaker she creates a new past for herself and travels to India in the company of REAL ladies. There she meets Mr. Ingram, who has secrets of his own. A marriage of convenience is arranged and Linny once again finds herself at the mercy of a man with bad intentions.

I won’t share the ending because I don’t want to ruin it for you if you decide to read this wonderful book. All I will say is that the strong always do find a way to rise from the ashes.

I admire the writing of Linda Holeman. This was the first book of hers I read and I will definitely be looking for more.
