The Things We Do For Love
Starting June 28th Michael Weston, a CIA Operative on USA Network’s Burn Notice a new TV series, will be fired. You can find out the true story behind his termination by visiting the USA network site for Burn Notice.
But being a writer, I can’t help but put my own personal spin on what COULD have happened to get Michael fired. Working for the CIA, as we all know, means that a person must go through rigid personal background checks to assure that they have never been in trouble and that they can be trusted. However, Michael had a friend with a desk job in the offices of the CIA who made his sins of the past disappear so that he would be assured of getting hired. Michael hadn’t done anything THAT bad, though it was something that definitely would have forced his rejection as a CIA operative.
What was it that Michael did? Well, as a young, wild, impetuous man, he got in with the wrong crowd and was arrested for possession of marijuana. Though Michael hasn’t touched the stuff since, which the girl with the desk job that helped him out knew, since she’d been friends with him since childhood, they both knew this showing up on his record would ruin his chances at a career with the CIA. Cathy, his childhood friend, has loved Michael her whole life, and she knew how strong his desire was to work as an agent for this illustrious agency. All she could think about was her love for Michael and how she couldn’t bear to see him lose his dream due to a stupid mistake he made as a kid.
But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions and when the truth is uncovered, not only will Michael lose his dream, but Cathy, who has worked her way up the CIA corporate ladder, will not only be out of a job too but will be facing legal charges for tampering with government records.
