Review of “Helpless” by Barbara Gowdy

I just finished reading this book, “Helpless” by Barbara Gowdy and it is hard to describe to you, without sounding sick or perverted, what a good book it is. The reason it is hard is because parts of it are told from the perspective of the child abductor, who is a pedophile at heart. I guess the reason the book is still good is that he never gets the chance to act on his impulses. A view into the mind of someone this sick was interesting, to say the least. Especially when you see that he actually has himself convinced that he is protecting this child, that he has her best interest at heart, which is a total delusion, but you see what I mean. Anyway, the story is also interesting due to the fact that it is not only told from his perspective, but from several viewpoints: the child, the mother, the abductor’s girlfriend.

This is a good read and Barbara Gowdy, who made a name for herself when she wrote “The White Bone” which I haven’t read yet but plan to, is a good writer.
