Obama and Huckabee Take Iowa Caucus
Well, the votes are in and from what I have read the Iowa Caucus is one of the strongest predictors of what the presidential race will ultimately look like, and I like what I see for the Democratic side. Obama scored 38 percent of the vote, while John Edwards came in second with 30 and Hillary Clinton third with 29. Obama is my man in 2008!
But I worry about those pesky Republicans. I cannot stomach one more minute after G.W. Bush is removed from office of having a right wing Christian in office. I am sorry, no offense to your Christians out there, but it seems that ultra-conservative Christians tend to be very judgmental and close minded. We don’t need someone like that running a country based on democratic ideals. Look where the mix has gotten us!
Anyway, on to the Republican results: Huckabee won with 34 percent, with 25 percent for Mitt Romney, 13 percent each for Fred Thompson and John McCain, 10 percent for Ron Paul and 3 percent for Rudy Giuliani.
Obama, 46 and a first-term senator from Illinois, had this to say at his victory rally, “Big cities and small towns, you came together to say, ‘We are one nation, we are one people and our time for change has come.’”
Huckabee had his own celebration and his words were, “A new day is needed in American politics, just like a new day is needed in American government,” the former Arkansas governor told cheering supporters. “It starts here, but it doesn’t end here. It goes all the way through the other states and ends at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.”
Huckabee is a preacher turned politician, (Lord help us) He stressed his religion to the extent of airing a commercial that described himself as a “Christian leader.” In interviews as they entered the caucuses, more than half of all the Republicans said they were either born-again or evangelical Christians, and they liked Huckabee more than any of his rivals.
About half the Democratic caucus-goers said a candidate’s ability to bring about needed change was the most important factor as they made up their minds.
