Review of “Lottery” by Patricia Wood

I just finished reading “Lottery” by Patricia Wood. It is one of the sweetest, funniest, smartest books I have ever read. I couldn’t stop smiling. Perry L. Crandall is a man just on the edge of being retarded, but don’t ever use that word around Perry! He is not retarded. His number is 76 and you have to be under 75 to be retarded. But for a man who is slow, Perry is pretty darn smart, thanks to a loving heart and the lessons he learned from his Gram, who raised him.

When Perry L. Crandall wins the lottery, unfortunately, Gram has just died and is not around to warn him about the vultures that will come out of the wood wanting to be his friend, the worst of the vultures his own family. But Gram talks to Perry in his head, helping him to make the right decisions. But still, it is a good thing that Perry has real friends in the form of Gary, his boss and the owner of Holsted Marine Supply where Perry works. Perry knows everything there is to know about boats and sailing, thanks to him Grampa, who died several years before. There is also Keith, the beer bellied drunk who is Perry’s best friend, and his girlfriend Cherry, an overweight outcast who Perry has a huge crush on.

Told from the perspective of Perry himself, this book is a treat all the way through and it proves that a kind heart is really all that is required to navigate the perilous waters of life and love. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an uplifting, light read that will leave you thinking about what is really important.
