Grocery Shopping on a Budget
This is an art. So if you are having a hard time learning to stick to a budget when you go grocery shopping don’t despair. It is an art that is learned. You won’t know how to do it instantly, it will take practice. But I assure you, it can be done. And you will feel so good about yourself once you have mastered the art of grocery shopping on a budget.
I remember when I was young and married with a career and two children. That was back in the late 70s and our weekly budget for groceries was $40. That was a lot of money back then, actually. But we’re talking about feeding four people. I got so good at adding in my head, mainly out of fear of embarrassment that I would have to put something back at the checkout counter, that I could come within a dollar of what the total bill was. That was very empowering.
The thing to do is only take the amount of money you are going to spend with you, no credit cards or debit cards. Then you will have no choice but to tally as you go, and you won’t be tempted to buy things you don’t need because you won’t have the money for them! That’s how it starts, and before you know it, you will easily sail through the grocery store knowing that you are sticking to your budget, credit cards or debit cards in no jeopardy of being overdone.
